The largest city on Hawaii’s Big Island, Hilo borders Hilo Bay and lies at the foot of three volcanoes: Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Kilauea (the world’s most active volcano). Hilo is the wettest city in the United States, receiving between 130 to 200 inches of rainfall per year, making the city very lush and green. Hilo attractions include the Mokupapapa Discovery Center for marine studies, the Pacific Tsunami Museum and the Hilo Farmers Market—one of the best open-air markets in the state.
From volcanoes to underwater wonders, coffee to ranches, beach resorts to hula dancing, Hawaii has packed a whole lot into one island.
